Nearly 1500 people evacuated from Paris homes as River Seine continues to rise

Nearly 1500 people evacuated from Paris homes as River Seine continues to rise

Nearly 1,500 people have been evacuated from homes in the Paris region, with authorities on alert for any major flood risk after the levels of the swollen River Seine rose further on Sunday.

Michel Delpuech, head of the Paris police body, told reporters that around 1,500 people had been moved out of homes in the Ile de France region comprising the French capital and its suburbs.

The Seine’s waters were set to peak later on Sunday or early on Monday close to levels which led to similar flooding in 2016, authorities said.

The overflowing waters have already engulfed riverside walkways in Paris and led the world-famous Louvre museum to close a basement display of Islamic art.

Paris’s “Bateaux Mouches” tourist boats have been shut down due to the high waters while swans have been seen swimming where there are usually pavements and rats forced up onto the streets.

Flooding caused destruction in Paris in 1910 when the Seine rose by 8.65 meters, although no deaths were recorded there.

Will Ferrell stars as George W. Bush in SNL skit, reminds Americans he was a ‘really bad’ president

Over the last year, Saturday Night Live viewers will have grown accustomed to the show’s cold opens being dominated by skits mocking the president of the United States, and this week’s show continued that theme — albeit with one minor difference.

Rather than ride on Alec Baldwin‘s bluster-filled Donald Trump impersonations, this week’s SNL featured Will Ferrell reprising his role as former president George W. Bush.

Much of the skit revolved around President Bush reminding Americans that his presidency was disastrous, even if it seems to compare favourably to the Trump presidency in hindsight.
The skit begins with Bush seated in what appears to be the Oval Office, although he clarifies that it’s actually a replica that he had constructed in the basement of his Texas home.

After showing off an oil painting of a dog in a hot air balloon — Bush has become an avid painter post-presidency in real life — Ferrell’s version of the former president touts his approval rating, which he boasts is at an all-time high.

“At this point, I might even end up on Mount Rushmore right next to Washington, Lincoln and I wanna say… Kensington?” Bush says. “I dunno, but the point is I’m suddenly popular AF and a lot of people are saying, ‘man I wish George W. Bush was still our president right about now!’
Girl, 16, starved and left to die on floor by adoptive mother
Natalie Finn was starved to death by her own adoptive mother
A teenage girl who was starved to death by her adoptive mother weighed just six stone when she died in October 2016.
Heartbreaking images of tragic Natalie Finn show the emaciated 16-year-old covered with blood and scratches after being starved and left to die on the floor by Nicole Finn.
A court heard 43-year-old Finn, of West Des Moines, Iowa, kept Natalie and siblings Mikayla and Jaden locked in a filthy bedroom without furniture.

They were not allowed regular access to food or a bathroom for months and would often climb out a window of their home and seek food from neighbours.

Experts said Mikayla and Jaden were at risk of starving to death as well and spent months recovering after Natalie suffered cardiac arrest.

Prosecutors described mother-of-five Finn as more concerned about her animals than her children.

Local media said Mikayla testified in court that she would drink from a toilet because she was so thirsty and that Natalie had almost no fat or muscle on her when she died.
