North Korea has accused the United States of a raft of human rights violations against its own citizens, including racial discrimination, erosion of the freedom of the press and gender inequality.

The government's "white paper" on violations, produced by the DPRK Institute of International Studies, also accuses the US administration of causing rising unemployment and soaring medical costs, as well as being to blame for gun crime.

The report was released shortly before President Donald Trump's State of the Union speech and is being seen as a pre-emptive attack on the president.
