EU hit with Swiss DEMANDS: Bern seeks new banking deal as referendum threatens bloc split

SWITZERLAND has laid out its priorities for a new relationship with the EU, emphasising single market access for banking and financial services as Swiss face a new referendum on the bloc.

The Swiss federal council wants a clearly defined relationship with Europe to provide stability for its bankers trading across the continent, dubbing this "an essential point for the Swiss economy and the financial sector".

A statement by the council says: "The council wants broad and secure access to the EU single market, and clearer legal status.

"These two aspects are closely linked: it is important for Switzerland to have access, on the basis of a clear legal framework, to the segments of the European internal market that are essential for its economy."

It cited "institutional issues" that make the exact nature of the relationship difficult to decipher, and spoke of the need to "consolidate existing bilateral agreements in the area of reciprocal market access".
